Located in the heart of New Orleans, Louisiana, the LSU Textile & Costume Museum has something for everyone. Portuguese designer fashion and textiles exhibits
Among the many museums in the WOW (World of Wine) block of Vila Nova de Gaia, Portugal, the Fashion and Textile Museum has to be one of the more intriguing. Located in a historic 18th century residential building, the museum will showcase a plethora of Portuguese designer fashion and textiles in a 2000 square meter setting.
The Bonaveri Museum aims to educate visitors on the storied history of fashion in Portugal. Displaying historical fashion designs from the 16th to 19th centuries, the museum offers a glimpse into the evolution of the Portuguese fashion industry. It also provides space for new designers to display their work and share industry knowledge.
The Textile Museum of Portugal displays some of the country’s finest examples of textile craft. Featuring items like a shuttle loom from the 1910s and remnants from old textile factories, the museum demonstrates the importance of Portugal’s textile industry. The museum also features a selection of linen seeds and beaver pelts used to make hats and footwear.
Bata Shoe Museum
Located in Toronto, Canada, the Bata Shoe Museum is an internationally acclaimed footwear research centre. The museum features a unique collection of over 14,000 shoes, dating back over 4,500 years. It also contains related artifacts and archaeological findings. The museum is home to one of the world’s most comprehensive collections of footwear.
The museum focuses on the role of footwear in shaping cultural life. The Bata Shoe Museum celebrates the richness and diversity of footwear across time and culture. They also sponsor global field research.
The museum’s current exhibition, “The Great Divide,” explores the complex stories of gender, race, and imperialism. The exhibition will showcase artifacts from the museum’s permanent collections and from the Bata Shoe Museum’s archives.

LSU Textile & Costume Museum
Located on the LSU campus, the LSU Textile & Costume Museum provides a large and diverse collection of objects related to Louisiana’s material culture and textiles. It is the state’s leading institution for preservation and research. It is active in artifact conservation and research, and offers changing exhibitions of national and international interest.
The museum’s collections include prehistoric and contemporary high fashion, ethnic and household textiles, and studies of technical and sociocultural significance. It has one of the largest collections of costumes and textiles in the country. The museum is a member of the Louisiana State Museum. The Museum’s Collection spans the late 18th century through the present. Approximately 15,000 objects are included in the collection. The Costume Institute
Located in the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York City, The Costume Institute is the largest museum collection of fashion in the world. Its collections span seven centuries and include more than 35 thousand garments, fashion accessories and textiles.
This year’s flagship show is In America: An Anthology of Fashion. The exhibition explores the foundations of American fashion and features individual designers from the 19th century to the mid-late 20th century.
In addition to the museum’s Costume Institute Collection, the museum’s Historic Costume & Textiles Collection contains more than 11,500 objects. These include articles of clothing, textiles and contemporary designers.
The Costume Institute’s Irene Lewisohn Costume Reference Library is one of the world’s most prestigious fashion libraries. It holds over thirty thousand books, artist books and textile samples. It also has over seven hundred periodical titles.
The Anna Wintour Costume Center is located at the Met and contains more than three thousand costumes. It represents seven centuries of fashion and includes regional costumes as well as accessories for men and women.
